Did you know ChatGPT will literally tell you what to put on your website so you can show up in their search results?
And it's by scanning the exact questions it asks Bing - because ChatGPT search is powered by Bing.
Here's how to see exactly what ChatGPT searched for, so you can optimize your content to get cited.
Why This Works
When ChatGPT answers a question using search, it sends specific queries to Bing. These queries are the exact variations of content you want on your website.
If you can see what ChatGPT searched for, you know exactly what to optimize for.
Here's the step-by-step process:
Step 1: Ask ChatGPT a Question
Go to ChatGPT and ask a question that triggers the search feature.
Step 2: Copy the Conversation ID
Look at your browser's URL bar. You'll see a URL like
Example: https://chatgpt.com/c/abc123def456ghi789...
Copy everything after /c/ - those characters are your conversation ID.
Step 3: Open Developer Tools
Right-click anywhere on the ChatGPT page and select Inspect from the menu (or press F12 on your keyboard).
Step 4: Open the Network Tab
In the developer tools panel that appears, click on the Network tab at the top.
Step 5: Filter by Conversation ID
In the Network tab, find the filter box (usually at the top). Paste your conversation ID there and press Enter to refresh the view.
*Important* you have to return to the chatGPT query page and refresh there for the updated info to show in the Network tab,
Step 6: Find the Backend API Call
Hover over the ID numbers you see in the left hand panel, and the largest one that says "backend-api/conversation". Click on it to select it.
Step 7: Search for "search_model_queries"
With the backend API call selected, you'll see response data on the right. Press CTRL + F (or CMD + F on Mac) to open the search function.
Type: search_model_queries
This will highlight where ChatGPT's search queries are located in the code.
Step 8: Copy the Search Queries
Below where it says "search_model_queries," you'll see the exact queries ChatGPT sent to Bing.
This is what you need to put on your website.
These queries reveal:
Exact keyword variations ChatGPT expects to find
Question formats that trigger your content
Content structure that gets cited by AI systems
How to Use These Queries:
1. Use them as H2 headers on your page
## [Exact query from ChatGPT]
2. Answer them directly in your content Write clear, concise answers that match the query intent.
3. Match the language/terminology exactly Don't paraphrase - use the same words ChatGPT searched for.
