I teach people how to build AI-powered web apps people subscribe to. Whether you're building inside my Leveraging AI Community or on your own, these 10 usability principles are worth knowing.
These aren't random tips. They're based on Jakob Nielsen's famous 10 Usability Heuristics—the most cited list in UX, from the same Jakob in the video.
1. Always show what's happening.
Loading? Saving? Processing a payment? Say so on screen. A spinner, a progress bar, or a "Saved" checkmark lets users know the app heard them.
2. Speak your user's language, not your app's.
No jargon. Your button should say "Download your report," not "Export asset."
3. Give people an exit.
Every action needs an undo, a cancel, or a back button. If deleting something is forever, warn them first.
4. Don't reinvent what already works.
This is Jakob's Law. Put the cart where people expect it. Use familiar pricing layouts. Let your logo take users home. Familiar builds trust.
5. Prevent errors instead of explaining them.
Disable invalid actions, auto-format inputs, and confirm destructive actions. The best error message is the one users never see.
6. Show options—don't make people remember.
Menus, suggestions, filters, and recent items are easier than relying on memory.
7. Let power users go fast.
Keyboard shortcuts, saved defaults, and repeat actions make experienced users more efficient.
8. Cut everything that isn't the point.
Every extra button, banner, and paragraph competes with the action you want users to take.
9. Write error messages people can act on.
Don't say "Error 402." Tell users what happened and what they should do next.
10. Put help where the problem is.
A tooltip beside a confusing field beats sending someone to a long help center.
