AI search engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity are changing how people find content. If your blog isn't optimized for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), you're invisible to millions of potential readers.
Follow these 4 steps to make sure AI models find, understand, and cite your content.
STEP 1: Write Your Blog Using AI
Why this matters: AI models cite content that directly answers questions in a clear, structured format. If your blog is just walls of text, AI can't extract clean answers to cite.
What to do:
Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT or Claude:
"Write a blog post about [YOUR TOPIC] using this structure:- Use H2 headings formatted as questions (example: "How do I optimize my blog for AI search?")- Answer each question in 40-60 words immediately after the heading- Use bullet points to break down details- Keep paragraphs 2-3 sentences maximum- Make it conversational and easy to read"
Where this goes:
Paste the AI-generated blog post into your blog editor (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, etc.)
STEP 2: Add FAQ Section with Schema Markup
Why this matters: Schema markup is code that tells AI models "this is a Q&A section." It makes your content incredibly easy for AI to extract and cite. Without it, AI might skip over your FAQ entirely.
What to do:
Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT or Claude:
"Create an FAQ section with 5 common questions and answers about [YOUR TOPIC], and format it as schema markup code that I can paste into my blog HTML."
Where this goes:
1. Copy the generated schema markup code
2. Find your blog post's "Custom Code" or "HTML" section
3. Paste the code at the bottom of your post
4. Save and publish
STEP 3: Submit to Bing Webmaster Tools
Why this matters: Bing powers ChatGPT's search function. If you're not indexed in Bing, ChatGPT can't cite you. Period.
What to do:
5. Go to: bing.com/webmasters
6. Sign in with your Microsoft account (or create one for free)
7. Click "Add a Site"
8. Enter your website URL
9. Choose verification method (easiest option: copy/paste HTML code into your site settings)
10. Once verified, go to "Sitemaps" in the left menu
11. Enter your sitemap URL (usually: yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml)
12. Click "Submit"
STEP 4: Submit to Google Search Console
Why this matters: Google powers Gemini and influences many other AI search tools. Plus, traditional Google search still drives massive traffic. You need to be indexed here too.
What to do:
13. Go to: search.google.com/search-console
14. Sign in with your Google account
15. Click "Add Property"
16. Enter your website URL
17. Choose verification method (easiest: HTML file upload or HTML tag)
18. Once verified, go to "Sitemaps" in the left menu
19. Enter your sitemap URL (usually: yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml)
20. Click "Submit"
